A huge American flag was stolen from Linnehan Homes in Ellsworth over the weekend, and now the owner is offering a reward for the conviction of the person(s) responsible.

The massive flag has become a staple on Route 3 in Ellsworth, flying for years over Linnehan's Ford dealership. And, in recent years, over the newly formed business 'Linnehan Homes.'

Police say it couldn't have been easy to steal. The American flag is 20 feet high, 38 feet long, and weighs 40 pounds, which would have made it difficult to gather up and carry. The ropes securing the flag are knotted 7 feet up on the pole, so it appears that someone stacked up cinder blocks to reach them.

Owner John Linnehan is now offering a $1,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for taking the flag. Anyone who thinks they may know who took it can call Linnehan at 812-8558, email jenn@linnehanhomes.com, or call the State Police at 973-3700.

Police are asking the public to keep their eyes open. Memorial Weekend is coming up and, if someone unfurls this massive flag, others are bound to notice.
