Sometimes we get so wrapped up in our own little world that we forget about the enjoyment that comes from just being outside and enjoying the great outdoors here in Maine. Why we don't get out and explore our own surroundings more often is beyond me. Our kids certainly deserve some outdoor fun and exercise. With that in mind, I bring to your attention the best kept outdoor secret in our area: Sunkhaze Meadows National Wildlife Refuge.

Sunkhaze Meadows is located just to the East of Milford and Costigan. Actually, it covers quite an area. But what beautiful country it is. Sunkhaze is jam packed with such a variety of wildlife, vegetation, and insects it's hard to fathom. And it affords opportunities to canoe on Sunkhaze Stream and hike on some great trails too; and in season you can cross-country ski, and snowmobile.

Or you can take in a great presentation by Sunkhaze's Refuge Manager, Beth Goettel, which will be held Saturday, October, 20, at 10 a.m., at Daybreak Bakery, 241 Main St., Old Town.
