I will take any excuse to show appreciation for my cats! That's why today I'm celebrating my (mostly) black cat, Butter!

So Butter is not technically an all black cat, she is a special type of cat called 'Tortoise Shell' where she is mostly black but has spots of white and orange mixed into her fur. Tortoise Shell cats are almost always female and in some cultures are considered a good luck cat.

Butter is a 6 year old sweetie with nothing but love to give. She was neglected by her first owners causing her to be surrendered to the Bangor Humane Society. She was adopted by a college student who was able to provide a roof and food for Butter but didn't have the time or love for her.

When Butter's previous owner moved in with me I first met a very scared, and depressed cat. Butter would hide all day and night only coming out for food and to use the liter box. I started spending a lot of time with the scared cat, trying to coax her out and getting her to trust me.

Long story short, it only took a number of days for me to realize this was not a cat scared of humans but a cat who didn't trust humans. After spending time with Butter she was sleeping in my room and following me around the house. Taking notice of this was her previous owner. Because Butter liked me so much she was given to me, an offer I couldn't refuse!

Four years later and she is a totally new cat! She greets me at the door when I get home, spends every moment she isn't sleeping searching for someone to pet her, and purring loudly when you just say hello to her. One of my favorite things about Butter are her hugs. If you hold her close to you she tucks her face right into your neck and starts to drool!

I appreciate my black cat and so does her best friend, Sheep, my other cat who loves having Butter around to play with. If you have a black cat, show them some extra love today!
