Today is the start of the Elvis Presley Birthday Celebration in Memphis. It lasts days, has all kinds of Elvis related events and is quite the experience, no matter how muchor little of an Elvis fan you are. For some, this is don't miss. For some, it's just a chance to be curious and observe.

If you ever find yourself in Memphis, no matter what time of year, at the top or near top of the 'must do' list, is a trip to Sun Records Studio. That's the studio that Elvis walked into, paid his 4 bucks, and cut a two song demo record as a present for his mother. The engineer played the tunes for owner Sam Phillips, and the rest as they say is history.

On that studio tour, which I did about 10 years ago, you get to stand in the exact same spot on the floor where Elvis stood.  And Johnny Cash. And Carl Perkins.  And Jerry Lee Lewis. This is the very spot that country music, gospel music, and rock-a-billy music merged. It's truly very moving.
