JR Mitchell and I got into a discussion this morning about whether 'I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas' was sung by a kid or by an adult. So I did what I always do....I Googled it! And I found a video starring a very young, and very adorable Gayla. I love this song!

Gayla recorded the song in 1953, when she was 10 years old. It became such a hit that the Oklahoma City Zoo ran a fundraising campaign to buy a hippopotamus for Gayla. They raised the money, bought a hippo named Matilda, and gave it to the singer, who promptly donated it back to the zoo.

LeAnn Rimes sang the song this week at Rockefeller Center and gave it a sexy, rocky twist. And Gretchen Wilson  has done a version that we played this morning. But, for me, Gayla's version is still my favorite!
