The State Fire Marshal's Office has charged a homeless man with setting a fire inside a barn in Richmond Sunday evening.

Gary Martin, 58, is charged with arson, burglary, criminal trespass and violating bail conditions, the Department of Public Safety said in a news release Monday.

Richmond Police discovered Martin inside the barn on Furlong Road, where he had been staying in recent days, public safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said.

When firefighters arrived on the scene, a fire was underway inside a grill and there was evidence of previous fires in several locations inside the building, likely set by Martin to keep warm, the release said.

None of the fires had spread and there was little damage to the barn.

Martin also is a suspect in a recent burglary at a vacant house in Richmond.
