A new program at Acadia Hospital in Bangor can help people truly ready to recover from an eating disorder.

Lead Clinician for the program, Sheri Glazier, says part of the intensive outpatient group therapy is having the group members bring a meal to eat while gathered together at a meeting. She says it's difficult for eating disorder sufferers to face this task, but it's part of the recovery process.

This new program is recommended for people recently released from a treatment facility looking to continue with their recovery, or people with mild eating disorder cases. But Glazier warns it's not for people needing intense, in-patient/residential therapy.

Glazier says there's a lot of shame felt with having any sort of eating disorder and many are too embarrassed to ask for help. Of those suffering from eating disorders, about 25% of them are male. Eating disorders are frequently associated with teenage girls, but Glazier reminds us that eating disorders don't discriminate and can happen to anyone.

The group meets for 8 weeks every Tuesday and Thursday from 4-7 PM in the Child and Adolescent Outpatient wing at Acadia Hospital in Bangor. For more information contact Sheri Glazier at (207) 974-6454 for details.
