Happy Grandparent’s Day September 8th
September 8th is Grandparent’s Day! Be sure to call and wish your grandparent’s a very special day! Whether you call them Grammy, Poppy, Grandma, Grandpa, Meme, Pepe, or some other name, they deserve a call, and if they’ve gone to heaven, remember them in some special way!
I have great memories of my grandparents. On my mother’s side, I called them Grammy and Poppy. They took me to Chicago, via Niagara Falls on one trip. I learned not to order the most expensive things on the menu in a restaurant, how to drive when I was 16 and that it was ok to walk to the neighborhood store when I was little. When I was 16 I lived for the summer with them in Framingham Massachusetts, while the rest of my family was in Bermuda. Much to my father’s chagrin, I grew my first mustache, and when I asked my Grammy to iron my shirts, she explained that ifyou hung them promptly when they came out of the dryer and then wore them, body heat would get rid of any wrinkles. I still remind my father of that today!
On my father’s side, I remember my Grandma and Grandpa. They came over to the United States from Hungary when my father was a young boy. They took me and my cousin Judy to the Poconos for a vacation. I remember vomiting on the side of the road after overeating and being car sick, thus prompting my Grandma to say just about every time she saw me for the rest of my life “Yi! Christopher! Don’t overdo it!” I remember trying tongue with my Grandma and Grandpa, and also my Grandma, who wasn’t a very good cook, making us a hot fudge sundae that was the absolute worst in the world as she made it with bittersweet chocolate and no sugar!
My children unfortunately never got to meet Bonnie’s mother, and I never did either. They knew her Dad, but he has passed, although they were able to spend time with him. My sons, Craig and Collin have a good relationship with my parents, pictured below. They have been a huge support to us, and a great resource for my children, their grandchildren.
If you aren’t close to your grandparents, and they’re still alive reach out to them. Life’s too short, days go by, and trust me, you’ll miss them when they’re gone. Happy Grandparent’s Day!
