Internships can get a bit of a bad reputation.  The most common complaints are, you don’t get paid, you get stuck with all the grunt work, all you do is deliver mail and organize filing cabinets, and you don’t actually learn anything that you will use in the future.  Although I’m sure some internships are like that, this one definitely isn’t.  I’m having a great time working here this summer, and here are a few of my favorite things about my internship.

Screaming BEER! into a microphone at 9 a.m.

Okay, so I’m not always screaming "beer," but one of the fun things about being an intern here is learning how to use the recording equipment and make commercials. Whether it’s trying to sound chipper while listing groceries and their prices for 60 seconds, or pulling off sounding like a bratty teenager complaining about anything and everything, recording a commercial can be a lot of fun.

Sitting in on the morning show

Everyone loves listening to their favorite morning show host while their getting ready and driving to work. But what most people don’t think about is how early those morning show hosts need to get up in order to get to the station and be ready to go on air. Although our morning show hosts are all naturally entertaining and very good at what they do, they still need to do some show prep to decide what they want to talk about. Do you think it’s a coincidence that they happen to know when national donut day is as well as national talk like a pirate day?

    Drinking waaay to much coffee

By the end of my first week here I had drank so much coffee I was shaking so hard that I couldn’t sit still and could hardly sign my name. I’ve learned to limit myself since then, but coffee is definitely a vital part of any internship.

    Doing remote broadcasts

Have you ever driven by some place and seen a radio station van parked out front and wondered what in the world they are doing there? Doing a “remote” is another one of the perks of the job. You get to meet new people (Jana Kramer before her concert on the waterfront), learn about local businesses (Season’s restaurant) and depending on where you are you may be you may even get free coffee (Tim Horton’s Camp Day).  We love to talk, so next time you see us, come on over and say Hi.

    Concerts!!

This kind of seems obvious when you’re working at a radio station, but it’s definitely the biggest perk of the internship. I really haven’t been to many concerts before, and I’ve never been to a concert on the waterfront before, but this internship has given me the opportunity to see several of them, and it has been an absolute blast.  I even got to introduce The Lost Trailers at the Bud Light 50-50-1 concert!

Yes, I do organize filing cabinets

Ok so I’ll admit, while there are lots of amazing things about being an intern here, I do organize some filing cabinets.  No job is ever all play and no work. When you’re on the bottom of the totem pole you will without a doubt get stuck with some of the grunt work. But you can even learn something from doing that. For instance, I now can manage to alphabetize paperwork without singing the ABC song in my head.
