A Penobscot County grand jury on Wednesday handed up 37 indictments, including one against Philip Scott Fournier in the 1980 death of Joyce McLain.

Fournier, 55, of East Millinocket was arrested on March 4 in connection with the death of the high school student that remained unsolved for more than three decades.

McLain, who was 16 when she died, disappeared while jogging not far from Schenck High School. A few days later, her body was found near the jogging trail she used. Fournier was 19 years old at the time of the murder.

Her neck and head had been struck repeatedly with a blunt object, police said.

A grand jury indictment is not a finding of guilt. By handing up an indictment, the grand jury is finding that the prosecution has presented enough evidence to formally charge a defendant with a crime and take the case to trial.
