Gov. Paul LePage on Monday vetoed a bill that had the support of beer drinkers across the state.

The measure would have required businesses that sell pints of beer to actually serve the beer in a 16 ounce glass.

Governor LePage said in his veto letter that Maine already has laws that protect consumers from deceptive trade practices.

He also said the bill would have created additional financial and regulatory burdens on businesses.

LePage wrote that, “If any restaurants in our state provide unsatisfactory service or serve smaller-than-expected portions to the public, then I trust the people of Maine will vote with their feet — and their wallets — to frequent the establishments that serve them well and to avoid those that do not.”

It would take two-thirds support in both the House and Senate to override LePage’s veto.
