Members of a Maine Warden Service dive team recovered the body of a 66-year-old man from Messalonskee Lake in Kennebec County Monday morning.

Corporal John MacDonald of the Maine Warden Service says the body of Peter Wesley Townsend of Belgrade was spotted by three people who were fishing on the lake around 10:30 a.m.

"Townsend’s body was located approximately 100 feet from shore in six feet of water," MacDonald said in a press release Monday. "Peter was an avid swimmer who regularly swam this route throughout the summer."

The incident remains under investigation and will be reviewed by the Maine Medical Examiner’s Office and the Kennebec District Attorney’s Office.
