A local clinic is holding a day of free dental care for children in families with financial hardship. The day will also give the dentists a chance to talk with children about the importance of taking care of their teeth.

The Caring Hands of Maine Dental Center in Ellsworth is hosting the day of free dental care this Saturday in celebration of the 'Give Kids a Smile Program.' Dr. Timothy Oh, DMD, clinic director, says the services will be available to children from birth to 18 years of age.

Dr. Oh says good dental care begins at a young age, and it starts with parents educating their children about how to care for their teeth. Brushing should be done twice a day with daily flossing, according to Dr. Oh. And young people need to cut down on sugar-filled foods and beverages that can have a lasting effect on the health of their teeth. Saturday's event also gives the dentists a chance to give the children's teeth a good examination and head off any potential issues before they become serious.

"There's nothing quite like bringing a smile to a child," says Dr. Oh.

Anyone interested in taking advantage of this opportunity can contact Caring Hands of Maine Dental Center at (207) 667-6789 for more information and to schedule an appointment. The dental center is located at 70 Kingsland Crossing in Ellsworth. Appointments are necessary to take advantage of Give Kids a Smile Day.
