Employees of the Kennebec Valley Humane Society are searching for five kittens that were abandoned outside the society's Augusta building this week.

The kittens and an adult female cat were left in two boxes outside the building sometime after closing Tuesday night, according to a post on the KVHS Facebook page.

An employee discovered the boxes just before 7 a.m. Wednesday. A note that was left behind said the cats were inside the boxes, but they had escaped from the boxes and could not be located.

The post discouraged pet owners from leaving animals outside the shelter.

“No animal should be delivered and left at a shelter in this manner, as it can be incredibly dangerous, especially with Maine weather being as it is at times."
