Fire marshals say the deadly blaze early Tuesday morning at an apartment house in Palmyra started in one of the two apartments above the garage.

The cause of the 3 a.m. fire on Square Road remains under investigation, according to an update Tuesday afternoon from the Maine Department of Public Safety.

Two people, residents of one of the apartments above the garage, were killed in the fire. The bodies of the victims, believed to be a man and woman, were transported to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Augusta for examination and identification, the release said.

In all, 11 people lived in the six apartments in the converted farmhouse. The release said some of those displaced residents heard smoke detectors, while others said they heard nothing.

Investigators said the cause of the fire will be difficult to determine, as the garage was flattened in the blaze.
