Crews were on the scene of a 3-alarm fire at the Rice/Allied Glass building on Hammond Street in Bangor overnight.

Neighbors say they heard a series of loud pops just before smoke and flames started shooting through the roof of the building. One person described it to WABI-TV as sounding like a car backfiring. Firefighters had a tough time battling the blaze because some of it was between the ceiling and roof, and the building's original tin ceilings were tough to pull down.

The building also houses an apartment, but no one was home when fire broke out and no one was injured. As you can see in the picture above, the heat from the fire melted siding on a neighbor's house, but the interior wasn't touched. The Rice/Allied building was heavily damaged by fire. Investigators from the State Fire Marshal's office will be on the scene, trying to determine what sparked the blaze.
