An elderly couple died Saturday when fire swept through their home. The State Fire Marshall's office says the bodies of the man and woman, both in their 70s, were found in the rubble of the one-story home on Elliotsville Road, in Elliotsville Township.

The victims were identified Sunday afternoon as George Beety, 78, and his wife Laurette Beety, 79.

The fire was reported just after 1 a.m. Saturday by a neighbor. By the time firefighters arrived, the home was fully engulfed in flames. The bodies were found in or near the living room and firefighters say it appears the couple was trying to escape the flames. The names of the victims are being withheld pending notification of family.

The Fire Marshall's office says the fire started in the dining room and, although the cause cannot be determined because of the extent of the damage, the wood stove was kept there. The house was a former seasonal camp that had been converted to a year-round residence.
