The family of a missing Maine Maritime Academy student have confirmed that the body pulled last week from the Penobscot River was David Breunig.

According to the Portland Press Herald, the parents of the 21-year-old MMA junior have confirmed that their son's body was found on Friday. His mother, Elaina Breunig told the paper that her son drowned. She said she hoped that it would have been a better outcome, but now she's just glad that they can bring him home.

Breunig was last seen on February 26th, after leaving a party in Orono, headed toward a railroad trestle that crosses the Stillwater River, which flows into the Penobscot River. After a search failed to turn up any sign of the man, officials speculated the he had probably fallen from the trestle, into the icy water below.

On Friday, a body was spotted in the river, near the Sea Dog in Bangor, and was pulled out  near the Veteran's Remembrance Bridge. It was taken to the State Medical Examiner's office where the man's identity has yet to be confirmed.

Breunig's family posted his obituary on Monday, stating that he had died of drowning. His mother told the PPH that the Warden Service told the family that the man whose body was recovered on Friday had David's clothing and identification.

A memorial service is planned for Saturday in Westbrook. Visiting hours will be held Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Westbrook High School Auditorium. The visiting hours are open to the public.
