Eric Church, ‘Like Jesus Does’ – Song Review

Like Jesus Does
EMI Nashville

Eric Church has released his most devoted love song from ‘Chief’ as the album’s fifth single. ‘Like Jesus Does’ reveals the singer’s vulnerabilities in a way none of his previous ballads have done. Like ‘Springsteen,’ reference is made to famous classic rock standards, giving the song some familiarity even before a first listen is finished.

This is a crafty move, but one which shouldn’t be overdone. “I’m a lead foot leaning on a souped up Chevy / I’m a good ol’ boy drinkin’ whiskey and rye on the levy,” Church sings in the second verse. The line is inspired by Don McLean’s ‘American Pie, and writers Casey Beathard and Monty Criswell do a nice job weaving it into the fabric of the song without being disingenuous.

Lyrically, the song is as good as any on ‘Chief.’ ‘Like Jesus Does’ is the only song from the album Church didn’t help write, but the singer pours himself into each line as if it came from his pen. Know that he’s thinking of wife Katherine every time the poignant lyrics spill slowly from his lips.

“I’m a long gone Waylon song on vinyl / I’m a back row sinner at a tent revival / But she believes in me like she believes her bible / And loves me like Jesus does.”

The plodding melody and chorus don’t dig up one’s emotions as well as each verse does. It’s a slow-paced, thoughtful ballad that relies on the listener to be in a warm, contemplative mood to enjoy thoroughly. Despite Church’s sincere confession, the single isn’t able to pull one into that special place.
