Emmylou Harris Charged in Hit-and-Run Accident
Emmylou Harris is facing formal criminal charges stemming from a car accident in Los Angeles in October of 2012.
We reported in December that the legendary singer was under investigation for the accident, which took place at 10PM on Oct. 1. Harris was driving a rental car on L.A.’s 405 freeway when she reportedly struck another vehicle. The law requires the involved parties to stop and exchange information in an accident where there is property damage, but Harris instead drove away without stopping. The other driver subsequently filed a criminal complaint in Beverly Hills.
A representative for Harris called the incident a âminor traffic accident,â saying the singer âunintentionally rubbed bumpersâ with the other car. The rep said Harris did not realize that contact was made, so she proceeded on her way, and also called the incident a “garden variety accident” that is common on the 405, saying that the 65-year-old singer had turned the matter over to her insurance agent.
The Associated Press reported Wednesday (Jan. 30) that Harris — who has won a dozen Grammy awards for her solo work and collaborations with artists such as Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt and Alison Krauss — has been charged with misdemeanor hit-and-run in the accident. No court date has been announced, and Harris’ publicist did not return the AP’s calls seeking comment on the matter.
Emmylou Harris is slated to release a new album in late February.
