Ellsworth Man Sentenced To Prison For Standoff

An Ellsworth man who barricaded himself in his camper more than two years ago and threatened police is going to federal prison.

53-year-old Jeffrey Barnard pleaded guilty in June to being a felon in possession of a firearm or ammunition. The charges stemmed from an incident that happened in May of 2014. That's when Barnard barricaded himself and his wife inside his camper on North Street. The Ellsworth American reports he had a rifle and, at one point, fired it and called out 'this is war.'

Barnard held police at bay throughout the night, threatening to shoot officers and set fire to the camper. The standoff finally ended when Barnard was shot by Trooper Scott Duff. The Attorney General's office determined that it was a justified shooting.

Barnard is sentenced to spend six-and-a-half years in federal prison.
