Police say a 90-year-old man who was struck and killed by a dump truck in front of his Camden home early Thursday morning was lying down in the roadway before the accident.

A motorist traveling south on Route 1 around 4:20 a.m. stopped after noticing a man, later identified as Henry Dircks, lying in the roadway. The motorist attempted to alert the dump truck driver of the man lying in the road, but the dump truck did not stop in time and struck the man, Camden Police Chief Randy M. Gagne said in a news release.

The dump truck was operated by Travis Payne, 35, of Plymouth. Gagne said “visibility in the area at the time of the accident was poor due to heavy rain and fog.”

Police said they aren't sure why Dircks was lying in the roadway. He was dressed in sleeping attire and not wearing any shoes.
