Agents from the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency were on Indian Island last night, after fire crews reported a chemical smell at a home where smoke detectors were going off.

WABI-TV reports that firefighters responded to the report on Burnurwurbskek Lane around 6:00 Monday evening and detected a chemical smell in the home. The crews backed off and called in hazmat, who did an assessment of the situation. That's when MDEA was called in to investigate possible drug activity.

Agents found evidence of illegal drugs, but aren't revealing what substance they're dealing with. No one was home and no injuries were reported. At last report, the residents of the home had not been located. A meth lab was dismantled on the same street in April.

We'll update this story as more details become available.
