A Lewiston man suffered multiple injuries Thursday when his car collided with a tractor-trailer truck on the Maine Turnpike in Scarborough, police said.

Troopers said the driver of the car, Erik James, 30, slammed into the back of the tractor-trailer as it was changing lanes.

James was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland. In a press release from the Maine Department of Public Safety sent out just before 2 p.m., police said James was in surgery.

The truck driver, Jesus Benitez, 39, of Haverhill, MA, was not injured in the accident.

The wreck, which occurred around 12:30 p.m. in the southbound lanes at mile 40, caused delays for drivers for about 2 hours.
