I think most of us look forward to the commercials during the big game almost as much (if not more) than the football! But one public service announcement that was sprinkled in with all the fun gave a sobering look inside a home dominated by domestic violence. It was jarring, sad, and all too accurate. But it had an important message - if you're a victim, help is available.

In the commercial, a woman calls 911 and asks to order a pizza. The following conversation will break your heart as you visualize what this woman is dealing with. And chilling when you imagine what her attacker must look like, standing in the room with her. At the same time, you have to admire the woman's ingenuity and bravery in calling for help.

And that's the key message. If you're in an abusive situation, reach out. It's not always easy. Sometimes it takes some trickery to be able to do it without being further punished by your abuser. But help is available. There is life beyond the abuse. You just have to let someone know what you're dealing with.

I've read several reports that discuss whether the NFL put the PSA in the line-up to offset a tarnished reputation as the league dealt with players who abused their partners. It's been a tough year for the organization as it saw several instances of charges being brought against players. Did they do it for that reason? Maybe. But that's not really important. What's important is that they helped get the word out to victims. Help is available. Just reach out.

If you or someone you know is being abused, contact the Maine Coalition to End Domestic Violence or call the statewide toll-free hotline, 1-866-83-4HELP.
