Police removed 10 adult dogs and 8 puppies from a home on Chicopee Road because the animals were living in "inhumane conditions," according to the Buxton Police Department.

On Wednesday, the department's animal control officer visited the home after receiving a complaint regarding the animals' living conditions. The following day, police officers responded to the home along with the town's health officer.

The poor living conditions appeared to be the result of the overall number of dogs being kept at the residence and their continued breeding due to not being spayed and neutered, the department said.

The dogs have been released to the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland.
