So this back way to Sand Beach isn't a secret to a lot of the locals, but for those who don't know, this is useful information.

Sand Beach's parking lot off the main Park Loop Rd. is large and features restrooms and changing areas. But if you are looking to bypass the long road in, and don't need any of the amenities Sand Beach's parking lot offers, this is the way for you!

To get to Sand Beach the 'secret' way it will take a little bit of a hike. Instead of entering the park through a gated entrance you will actually want to take the Schooner Head Rd. located near Jackson Laboratory. Drive on this road until you reach a 4-way stop. One way to the right will take you to the Main Gate, you want to go straight. Less than a mile from here one the left you will see the parking lot for the Great Head Trail, park here!

The Great Head trail head is at the right end of the parking lot, this is what you want to take. Follow this trail about .3 miles and you will see a trail going down on the right. This trail turns into stone steps that take you to the far end of Sand Beach!

It's as simple as that! Remember even though you don't have to pass through the main gate to get to the beach this way, you still have to have a pass to park in the Great Head Trail Lot. Take the virtual trail here.
