Fundraising is underway to help a Dexter dairy farmer who lost his house, barn, and at least 25 cows to fire over the weekend.

According to the BDN, the fire at Kenny Trafton's farm started at around 11 am. Saturday, when a tractor that had been brought into the shop for repairs caught fire. His two-story farmhouse, as well as the attached barn, were destroyed. In addition, he lost milking equipment and farm machinery.

Trafton and his son, who also lives at the farm, were not injured in the blaze. But at least 25 out of the farm's 80 cows lost their lives and a cat was badly burned. The farm was not insured, so now community members are doing what they can to help Trafton recoup some of what he's lost.

A GoFundMe page has been set up, in hopes of raising $30,000 and, as of Monday morning, just over $3,100 had already been donated. A benefit dinner is also planned for March 19 from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Garland Grange.

Firefighters from several area communities fought the fire and the Red Cross is helping the family. Trafton and his son are staying with family for now.
