Dear Visitors from “Away” Please Leave Your Camp Firewood at Home

It's a common practice that state officials are hoping to nip in the bud in order to protect the state's trees, specifically the Ash species.

It’s right on our doorstep and it’s a destructive little creature called the Emerald Ash Borer. Acadia National Park Biologist Judy Hazen-Connery says they’re hosting a workshop next week that will be very helpful in identifying the insect which has already been found in New Hampshire.

Campers visiting the state can unknowingly give the beetle a free ride to Maine.

"It moves on infested firewood and with the many campgrounds in the area and camps, we're very concerned about the movement of this beetle because it causes the 100 percent mortality of the ash tree," explains Hazen-Connery.

The Emerald Ash Borer workshop will feature two expert speakers and it’s free on May first at the Acadia National Park headquarters starting at 4:30pm.
