The Damariscotta Police Department is warning residents of a scam that involves a couple who claim they're searching for their lost chocolate lab.

According to the Press Herald, police believe this is an attempt to steal prescription drugs. A woman comes to the door, claiming to have lost her dog. Often she is accompanied by a man in a pickup truck. The woman tells the homeowner that she's pregnant and asks to use the bathroom. Once she's used the restroom, she then leaves a fictitious name and phone number so the homeowner can call her if they see her dog. But, police say, there is no dog and the name and number are fake.

Officials were alerted of the scam in Damariscotta after several homeowners compared the notes they received, and then called police. In this case, no drugs were stolen. Anyone who has had a similar encounter is asked to call the police department.

In Nobleboro, 33-year-old Amanda Wallace was arrested after the theft of prescription drugs from a home on Center Street. Police there say she used a similar approach to enter a stranger's home. When she was arrested, there was a child in the car with her. Wallace is charged with theft.

Police remind residents to never let a stranger into their homes. Keep your house and car doors locked at all times. And if you see anything suspicious, report it to your local police.
