Two people from Sidney are facing charges after their 1-year-old child allegedly ingested heroin last summer.

Central Maine News reports 34-year-old Jason Thomas and 23-year-old Katie Robinson are charged with unlawful possession of heroin and endangering the welfare of a child. The incident in question happened in July of 2015.

Thomas and Robinson weren't arrested until December, although they took the 1-year-old to the hospital in July, where she tested positive for opiates. The delay in charges was due to an extensive investigation by police and the District Attorney's Office. The home was searched and many interviews conducted before officials felt they had enough evidence to proceed with an indictment.

The felony possession charge carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison, while the misdemeanor child endangerment charge carries a max penalty of 364 days. Both Robinson and Thomas have had previous drug convictions.
