An adult from Cumberland County has tested positive for West Nile Virus, the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention said on Tuesday.

The Maine CDC says the person had traveled to several states, so the origin is unknown. They became stick in early September after returning from the Mid-Atlantic states. Health officials say the patient was hospitalized and is now recovering at home.

“The warm weather of the last few weeks has allowed mosquitoes to stay active,” said state epidemiologist Dr. Siiri Bennett. "Mainers should remember to take precautions against being bitten.”

This is the second confirmed case involving a human in Maine and the first since 2012.

Health officials say West Nile virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis are transmitted through mosquito bites. They cannot be transmitted from human to human or animal to human.
