The Common Ground Fair is uncommon. There are no expensive rides or games to cheat you, just a celebration of nature and craftsmanship!

I love this fair, and try to make it down to Unity each year to enjoy it. Put on by the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association, or MOFGA, the Common Ground Country Fair has everything from agricultural demonstrations, to conservation tips, to chainsaw training! Along with the educational demonstrations, there are plenty of vendors on-hand to talk about their products that will help make your home or farm more efficient and Earth-friendly.

But my two favorite parts of the Common Ground Fair have nothing to do with any of that. First, the marketplace is amazing! You'll find everything from jewelry and photographs to stained glass and handmade furniture. Maine craftsmen show off their wares and will astound you with their talent. I could spend all day there, just walking from stand to stand!

However, I do get distracted by the smells from the food court. The Common Ground Fair has some of the best food anywhere. Lamb kabobs, burgers, ribs....you name it, you can find it there! Now, the last time I went, they still had a ban on caffeine at the fair, so you may be hard-pressed to find a cup of coffee. But piping hot cups of cider will be everywhere.

The Common Ground Fair starts Friday and runs through Sunday at the Unity Fairgrounds. For more information and a schedule of events, log onto the website for MOFGA. Make it part of your weekend plans and have fun!
