Police say a Colby College student was arrested during a graduation celebration that got out of hand early Sunday morning.

Firefighters were called to the senior dorms to put out a bonfire at about 1:00 a.m., reports CBS 13.

When fire crews arrived on the scene, they discovered a celebration that included hundreds of students. Officials say that's when the celebration turned violent.

"They were receiving beer bottles and cans thrown at them and also fireworks were being thrown in their direction and overhead at the same time," said Waterville Fire Chief David LaFountain.

Fire fighters became concerned about their safety, so they decided to spray the students with water, said Waterville Police Chief Joe Massey.

One of the students, Jonathan Sdao, was charged with two counts of assault and failure to submit to arrest.

Colby College officials say the school is investigating the incident.
