Several chickens escaped unharmed from a barn fire in Gardiner Tuesday.

Gardiner Fire Chief Al Nelson says a call came in around 1:30 PM Tuesday from the homeowner at 34 Capen Road, but the barn collapsed before fire crews arrived. Chickens and some equipment were being stored inside, and all the livestock made it out safely. No one was injured in the blaze but the barn is a complete loss. Crews from Augusta and Togus assisted the Gardiner Fire Department.
