A Suicide Attempt Can Be Stopped if You Know the Signs

In 2011 alone, 224 Mainers took their own life by suicide.

More can be done to prevent suicides in Maine, but it takes a community of well-educated people to do so.

One of the biggest myths dealing with suicide is that talking about the issue will actually cause someone who's suicidal to make an attempt.

That's just not the case according to Maine Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Dr. Sheila Pinnette, and she says an upcoming conference will help people to better identify risk factors.

Suicide Prevention Fence Considered for Penobscot Narrows Bridge

In the wake of a Bucksport Middle School teacher taking her life by jumping from the Penobscot Narrows Bridge Sunday, the state legislature considers erecting a suicide-prevention fence to prevent more deaths.

The proposal was forwarded by Representative Joe Brooks of Winterport and it moved through committee without debate and now moves forward for consideration.

Respite in Sarah’s Dream [Video]

Sarah had a passion for music, and great compassion for easing the burden of others.

When she was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 24, she and her husband Ben, would travel from Maine to Boston for Sarah's treatment. Not only was the young couple dealing with Sarah's diagnosis and the impact that would have on their future, they had to deal with frequent trips that were both exhausting and expensive.

Before Sarah passed away in 2011, she had already invested her time and determination to lay the foundation for the creation of a special home-away-from-home. A house that would serve as a warm and inviting space for weary travelers undergoing cancer treatments at the Lafayette Family Cancer Treatment Center in Brewer.

It’s an Epidemic That Can Be Stopped

Last week Governor Paul LePage ended his State of the State speech by calling on state lawmakers and citizens to recognize there's a serious epidemic in Maine and it's drug addiction.

One woman in particular was pleased the Governor addressed the issue and agrees with beefing up law enforcement, but, she cautions that's only part of the solution for reversing the powerful grip the disease has on those who struggle to regain control of their lives.

The problem can in fact be reversed, but it will take time, a multifaceted approach, and the commitment from citizens to prioritize financial resources.
