#LetTheGirlsPlay: Song Suffragettes Cover Carly Rae Jepsen, ‘Call Me Maybe’ [Watch]

All five get into this song, with full facial expressions and intonation. While they stay true to Jepsen’s original, this version of “Call Me Maybe” is its own song. Allison Veltz’s high harmonies as Alina Smith sings the second verse are notable. The different approaches Shorr and Smith take to the chorus stand out. Veltz’s bridge showcases her unique tone.

Lena Stone and Heidi Raye are the two other singers on stage. They had all had just performed three songs each, in the round. The Song Suffragettes perform every Monday night at the Listening Room in Nashville, and they close every hour-long show with a cover, this time picking Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe.”

The #LetTheGirlsPlay movement started in response to the struggles female artists were having getting heard in country music. Taste of Country started profiling one artist per month in May.
