A Camden resident who inspired Don McLean to write a song about him entitled 'Waving Man' has passed away.

His name was Kert Ingraham and he lived in the senior home at 63 Washington Street. Each day, Kert would wheel his chair out to the roadside so he could smoke. And as he sat there, passersby would beep their horns, and Kert would wave. As time went by, he became a fixture in the Camden community, beloved by people who only knew him as 'The Waving Man.'

One of those passersby was 'American Pie' singer/songwriter Don McLean, who was inspired by the friendly man in the wheelchair. So he wrote a song and named it 'Waving Man' after Kert.

Ingraham passed away late last month and, at his request, there will be no funeral. Instead, his family asks that people who want to honor Kert and his friendly greetings make donations to the senior center at 63 Washington Street in Camden.
