A former United States Marine from Orono is crossing the U.K. on foot with another American and four Brits, all wounded veterans, as part of the Walk With the Wounded Challenge.

I had never heard of this challenge until I noticed a video on YouTube. It features former United States Marine Andrew Bement talking about what it means to him to be a part of the Walk Across Britain. According to the event's website, Andrew was born in Arizona, but moved to Maine after his second deployment, attending the University of Maine's Marine Enlisted Commissioning Education Program. When he met the woman he would eventually marry, he decided to settle down here.

The Walk Across Britain is the latest in a series of challenges taken on each year by wounded veterans, to call attention to their strength and to help other wounded veterans train for and find employment after the military. The organization's Facebook page shows updates on their progress and beautiful pictures from the journey.

Congratulations to Andrew Bement for being chosen to take part in the Walk Across Britain, which began on August 22nd and will finish up in November. Good luck on the rest of your journey. And we're proud to call you a Mainer!
