A Brewer man is dead after an early morning crash on Interstate 95 in Howland.

Sidney Oakes, 60, was southbound when his Dodge Grand Caravan struck a moose at about 1 a.m. on Tuesday. Oakes, who was alone in the vehicle, died at the scene.

It is the state's first fatal vehicle-moose collision of 2014.

State Police urge motorists to use caution when driving at night because moose are prone to darting out into the roadway to avoid insects.

Maine records over 500 moose-vehicle crashes annually, many resulting in serious injury. There were no fatal moose collisions in 2013 and in 2011, but two people died in separate moose crashes in 2012, and there were three fatal moose collisions in 2010.
