Police in Brewer arrested a man for allegedly burglarizing a senior apartment complex on Colonial Circle Sunday morning.

Police responded to the apartment complex after a witness reported seeing a man enter an apartment through a window at about 11:30 a.m., the Brewer Police Department said in a news release on Monday.

Gordon Smith, 39, of Brewer, who matched the description of the suspect that was given to police, was spotted by an officer as he came out of the woods near the apartment complex.

Police said Smith resisted arrest and damaged a police cruiser while being taken into custody.

Smith had three active warrants for his arrest and also was in violation of numerous bail conditions, which included an order to stay away from elderly housing facilities, the release said.

Smith was arrested in November 2015 on felony theft charges after an incident at the same apartment complex.

After Smith's arrest on Sunday, he was charged with burglary, theft, criminal mischief and violating his bail conditions.
