A program seeking to raise awareness about the dangers of heroin abuse will hold an event October 21 in Brewer.

The Heroin Alert program discusses the effects heroin has on the human body and the legal consequences associated with possessing the drug.

A special Heroin Alert presentation will take place from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Brewer Performing Arts Center.

The event is being planned by the Brewer Police Department in partnership with the Brewer school system and Bangor Area Recovery Network (BARN).

“Opiate abuse and addiction are at critical levels and heroin has made an alarming comeback,” said Brewer Police Chief Perry Antone Sr. “As community members, educators, neighbors, and most importantly parents, we must educate ourselves and our youth on the deadly consequences of heroin use.”

The Heroin Alert program is presented by officer Perry Sorrels of the New Castle County Police Department in New Castle, Delaware and Marie Allen from Hockessin, Delaware, who lost her daughter to a heroin overdose in 1997.

The Heroin Alert presentation is free and open to the public. For more information visit the event's Facebook page.
