State Police say a driver shot and killed himself during a traffic stop before officials found the body in his trunk.

Public Safety director Steve McCausland says it was around 4:45 Thursday afternoon when police stopped a vehicle on Timberwood Drive in Gardiner. The vehicle was pulled over after State Police received reports that it had been operating erratically on I-295 a short time earlier.

The male driver immediately got out of the car, after stopping for police, and fatally shot himself. During the subsequent investigation, a body was found in the trunk of the car. Both bodies were transported to the State Medical Examiner's Office for autopsies and examination. Police haven't commented on the incident, but say there is no ongoing threat to the public.

The investigation is ongoing.
