A 27-year-old Bangor man was injured when he slipped on some ice and fell about 30 feet while hiking the Precipice Trail in Acadia National Park on Christmas Day.

At about 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, Tyler Wood slipped on ice while hiking up the trail on Champlain Mountain with a friend, who used a cell phone to call for help, park officials said in a news release Tuesday.

At 12:40 p.m., the first park rangers and Mount Desert Island Search and Rescue team members arrived at the scene, which was located about half way up the trail.

Because of Wood’s critical condition and the icy trail conditions, park rangers requested a helicopter from the Maine Army National Guard to remove Wood from the mountain, the release said.

He was transported to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. We're told he was in stable condition Wednesday morning.
