This is one of the few times in life where it's actually ok to say that you thought something was older than it is. I guess because the Bangor International Airport has been around my entire life, I take for granted that it wasn't always here. Once upon a time, it pretty much encompassed Dow Airforce Base. When the base was closed, it was transitioned into the sweet runway to the wild blue yonder that we know it as today.

This weekend they will be celebrating 50 years of serving Maine and beyond with an Open House at the BIA Airfield Maintenance Building on Maine Avenue, from 11:00a.m. - 2:00p.m. It's free, open to the public, and there is cool stuff for the whole family to do. There will be planes and airport related vehicles to check out, tours down the runway, and all sorts of games and prizes. There will also be plenty of chances to learn a lot about the history of BIA, and even grab a bite to eat.

So fly on down there Saturday and appreciate our ability to not have to go all the way to Portland to get on an airplane!
