A piece of a steel beam from the World Trade Center was on display at the Central Fire Station on Main Street in Bangor Wednesday.

The relic made a pit stop in Bangor while being transported from New York City to Gander, Newfoundland. It was given a police escort and was also accompanied by 15 members of the New York City Fire Riders, a motorcycle club made up of active and retired firefighters.

The town is receiving the beam as a gift after taking in some 6,700 passengers from 38 planes that were grounded in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Sunday marks the 15th anniversary of the attacks.
