The Augusta Police Department and the Bureau of Highway Safety will be cracking down on distracted driving this summer, Augusta police said in a news release on Monday.

The department has been awarded grant money for extra patrol officers who will focus specifically on texting and driving.

The efforts to deter distracted driving will take place between April and September and include traffic details, education and high visibility enforcement.

Distracted driving is a significant factor in many motor vehicle crashes, the release said.

Augusta police hope to reduce the number of accidents involving distracted drivers, especially accidents involving younger drivers.
