A man who led police on a foot chase in Augusta is now facing drug charges after allegedly dumping narcotics during the pursuit.

Deputy Chief Jared Mills says police received a tip from a community member at around 9:30 Wednesday night that 21-year-old Zachary Carey was in the area of Planet Fitness. The 21-year-old was wanted for questioning for allegedly fleeing on foot from a traffic stop on Monday, in violation of his probation. Responding officers saw Carey walking in the area of Wendy's on Civic Center Drive and approached him.

Carey took off on foot and allegedly discarded several packages of narcotics on his route. Police set up a perimeter and eventually caught up with him. Located were 0.4 grams of packaged heroin and 5.4 grams of crack cocaine, individually packaged for sale, and a digital scale. A search of Zachary's person turned up large sum of money, believed to proceeds from drug sales.

He's charged with Refusing to Submit to Arrest or Detention, Violation of Probation, and Aggravated Trafficking in Scheduled Drugs. Carey's bail was set at $5,000.
