The father of a two-year-old boy who nearly drowned in the Kennebec River in Augusta earlier this month has been charged with endangering the welfare of a child, police say.

Christopher Norwood, 31, of Augusta is scheduled to make his initial court appearance on Nov. 21, the Augusta Police Department said in a news release on Tuesday.

The toddler was pulled from the river near the East Side Boat Landing on Sept. 15. A witness who spotted the boy in the water, Sean Scanlon of Dresden Mills, jumped into the river and rescued the child.

The release did not say where Norwood was at the time of the incident.

Police said DHHS has been involved in their investigation since the beginning and has been working to ensure the safety of the child.

On Monday, police reported that the boy was still recovering but had been released from the hospital.
