Another New York Man Arrested in Maine on Drug Charges

A new trend in the drug trade in Maine seems to be coming out of New York, with several residents of the Big Apple arrested on drug charges recently. The latest happened just this morning. Public Safety Spokesman Steve McCausland says Juan Rivera, 40 of New York City was arrested this morning in Bangor after being found in possession of a substantial amount of heroin and crack cocaine. Police suspect he’s been selling it out of local motels. It’s the second time this week that the MDEA has taken into custody suspects from New York and charged them with selling drugs in Bangor. MDEA Commander Peter Arno said the investigation highlights the growing problem associated with out of state drug dealers relocating to cities and towns in our state.

In this case, when police searched Rivera’s motel room, they discovered nearly 40 grams of heroin, approximately one ounce of crack cocaine, and nearly $10,000 in cash. Street value of the drugs is estimated to be $25,000.

Rivera is charged with Aggravated Trafficking in Schedule W Drugs (Heroin and Cocaine Base). He wasn’t in the room at the time of the search, but was arrested sometime later during a traffic stop.

Police do not believe Rivera is connected with other New York City residents arrested recently on drug charges. The investigation is ongoing and more arrests are possible.
